America's 400th Anniversary

Jamestown UK

The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery – re-creations of three ships that brought English colonists to Virginia in 1607

In 2007, both British and American people will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English-speaking settlement in the New World. As President Theodore Roosevelt observed at the 1907 commemoration, the founding of Jamestown marks the beginning of the history of the United States of America.

It is important to note that the sailing of the three ships from Blackwall preceded the Pilgrim Fathers’ arrival in New England on the Mayflower by 13 years. This anniversary provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the trans-Atlantic relationship and in particular the very special ties between the UK and the USA.

The Jamestown 2007 British Committee has been endorsed by the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission, created by an Act of the US Congress in 2000, as the official British planning committee for the Jamestown commemoration. The Committee is co-ordinating commemorative events in the UK which began in 2006 and continue throughout 2007.
